What is Glycemic Load?
Glycemic Load (GL) is a single number that tells you how much a real portion of food will raise your blood sugar. It combines two things: how fast the carbs in that food hit your bloodstream (Glycemic Index, or GI), and how many carbs are actually on your plate. Because most people don’t eat 50 grams of pure carbohydrate at a time, GL is a far more useful number than GI on its own.
The formula (in plain English)
Glycemic Load = Glycemic Index ร grams of carbohydrate in the serving รท 100.
Take watermelon: its GI is a scary-looking 76. But a normal 120-gram slice only contains about 6 g of carbs. So GL = 76 ร 6 รท 100 = 4.6. That’s low. A big bagel, on the other hand, might have a GI of 72 and pack 50 g of carbs โ GL = 36. That’s very high, even though the two GI numbers are almost identical. The GL number is the one that predicts what actually happens to your blood sugar.
How to read the result
- GL under 10 โ Low. Minimal blood-sugar impact. Ideal foundation for meals.
- GL 11 to 19 โ Medium. Fine in moderation, especially when paired with protein, fiber, or fat.
- GL 20 or above โ High. Will cause a significant blood-sugar spike (and the crash that follows). Shrink the portion or add fiber/protein/fat to blunt it.
Why this matters for fat loss and energy
Every time your blood sugar spikes, insulin rises to move that sugar into cells. Insulin is a storage hormone โ while it’s elevated, your body stops burning stored fat. Repeated high-GL meals also flatten your energy and cravings by triggering the classic post-meal crash 60โ90 minutes later. Values are drawn from the International Tables of Glycemic Index (Foster-Powell, Holt & Brand-Miller, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) and the University of Sydney’s public GI database. Where multiple studies exist, we use the mean value; individual foods can vary ยฑ10 GI points depending on ripeness, cooking, and processing.
